My mainsheet ,and kicking strap, jammer are the original 1970's jobs out of Tufnol with sprung jaws and bodies of the same material. They no longer grip and I have to rely on additional half hitches in brisk weather.
Any tips on perking them up?
The jaws appear to be rivetted in position so any work on the springs will need surgery. Thanks Brian.

Try www.classicmarine.co.uk , they sell them. They may sell spares also, the owners name is Moray ( I think), he is very helpful. you could try boat jumbles, but I suspect most of what is for sale is just as clapped out as what youv'e got already. I would bite the bullet and get new ones.

I tried what you are thinking, and gave up after hours of profilling pawls etc.I found a new mainsheet block and jammer for 19 quid........ no further problem

You could try a new different thicker rope for the the main and kicker. It may just solve the problem if it is just wear of the teeth of the jammer. You cam possibly drill out the rivets of the jaws and replace with screw and nut.
