I passed my Phillipa 27 over to my son and I promised him a new set of sails to go with it. The sailmaker who came to measure her up for the sails told me that the mainsail was too large for her. He claims that a new boom must have been added some time in the past and the foot of the sail is far too long. The boom is 11 foot 3inches and the foot of the existing main is 11foot when fully pulled tight. He wants me to order a sail with a 8 foot 6 inches long foot. Now I have sailed her on and off for the last 16 years without noticing any thing wrong with the main and to use a much smaller main will look odd without changing. the boom.
Are there any other Phillipa 27 owners out there and if there are would you be so kind as to measure the foot of your main and let me know what size it is please. Also if it is the same as mine do you notice any problems with it's handling?
I have tried googling but no success and the prior owner has passed away so no way of finding out if he changed the boom .

Yeah I feel the same it's just that he was most insistent that the overall trim and handling of the boat would be improved especially in heaver weather and that there would only be a small loss of power in light airs. If an expert tells you these things then you have to listen even if you decide that you will go your own way in the end. That's why i was hoping that someone here would know what the original sail was

sorry to be picky, but can you confirm the name of the yacht type again please. No "Phillipa 27" on websearch.

Yes she is a Phillipa 27. as far as i am aware she was designed by Robert Clarke and built by John Phillips and son in Devon in 1974. There was only a few of them made before the design was tweaked and used for the verl 27 which is a well known design

I sold my Phillipa 27 in 2009 but I did have a new suit of sales made for her by Dolphin Sales in Harwich. I dont know if you were to contact them if they could advise the length of foot.

The boat was called Flipper and my name is Peter Broadley if that helps if you contact Dolphin.

I will try and look out my old paperwork at weekend when I am at home and see if there is anything in there but I may have had a clearout.

That might be good enough for a quote but I would not get a set made without the boat being measured by the maker - you have some comeback if/when things dont fit....
