Am considering replacing the mainsail boom, a converted Kemp roller boom of 345cm length, into something more appropriate for the latter part of the last century, ie provision for easily adjusted slab reefing lines.

I really don't know why people would ever want to sell one in reasonable working condition, but hope springs eternal.

Any available out there? Alternatively, can anyone recommend a supplier?

Try Z Spars (UK)

The French parent is probably cheaper.

Thanks Charles - I'd looked at the Selden Kemp website. It was a bit techie (we presently do things with bits of string), but more to the point, price not mentioned, hence ominous.

Also Bruce, it's already fitted out as a fixed ie non roller-reefing boom, and I have no intention of going forward to the past. But, there are probs getting the right tension for the clew, not to mention trying to slab-reef her. Hence, it would be nice but not essential to have in-boom reefing lines with real live clutches. Oh yes.

I got one from Z spars last year, 3.75m for about £280 inc VAT and delivery.
Very efficient, came within a week.

Just be careful to check the width and pin diameter of the gooseneck fitting as they are not standard.

They currently have a 3.27m "second" boom going for £160 all in which is a bit short but might do, depending on the foot of your mainsail.

Thanks for that Ridgy and all, as well as the PM received. I'll follow up all the leads. Have to be in the New Year (finance) ;-0 but it does look as though no-one ever wants rid of perfectly good ones. Pity.

Trouble is, if I buy a new boom, then I'll start thinking that I need a new mainsail. Where does it stop?

Regards

D

Several years ago I also got a 'kit' of parts, which included a secondhand boom section - cut to length from Z Spars - very helpful company to replace a knackered original boom. They also made me up a new gooseneck and mating plate for the mast section. Can't remember the cost but was a competitive price.
