Mainboom furl too hard

Reefrite, 34' keeler. Was on another boat and they easily sweated it up, 2 of them. Then I thought a conventional main would have gone up very easy. So what is the advantage? I seldom use the main cos so knackered after winching it up. Seriously thinking of ditching. Lowering you cant let the halyard fly, have to winch rotate the boom.
