I have a main sail that is the correct height for my boat but too short in the foot by about 150mm - 200mm. The sail is about 2 year old and would make a nice cruising main in it's present state, but it would be nice to get it altered to the correct size for my boat if the cost was minimal and a nice job could be achieved.

Has anyone got any experience of how or whether it could be done ?

I suspect that the other way round would be a lot easier. The panels in a main are usually horizontal so to add height is relatively easy, but to add length is not - several if not all panels would need extending to maintain the shape of the leech. I would try it as it is and if it works, as it probably will, I wouldn't bother modifying it.
