Postal Scam

Can you circulate this around especially as Christmas is fast approaching - it has been confirmed by Royal Mail. The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam:

A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service)suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize.

If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655 or ICSTIS (the premium rate service regulator) at www.icstis.org.uk

This certainly was a scam about 3-4 years ago, but was stamped on very quickly by the watchdogs, so I would be surprised if it still is in existence.

Surely another premium rate number, innit? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

And the full lowdown on this one is here...

From Snopes

A summary would be...

It did happen in 2005, but that number is long disabled.
You would have got charged £1.50 a minute to listen to lots of rambling.
£15 charged immediately someone made the call is incorrect.
If you stick it out to the end you would have been charged £9.
It might happen again with another number.

Nope... Inner london number...

Although these things are well intentioned, a quick check with ICSTIS shows that this was shutdown years ago. From their "check a number" service ..

How do they get BT premium rate number if it's a scam?? Twats!

[/ QUOTE ]
This is a more general point affecting other scams. BT has in the past been criticised for allowing users of 09 numbers to draw their cash immediately and disappear while BT forced the victims of the scam to pay up. One member of this forum was billed around £150 when a trojan reset his dial-up number to an 09 line, clocking up the bill while he spent an evening on the net.

Does anyone know if BT have cleaned up their act?

I'm pretty sure BT have a department for fraud discovery, and anyone abusing the service provided in a manner described above, would likely alert this dept into action. BT isn't the only company providing telephony services by the way. The 09xx number range is not exclusively allocatable by one trader in the industry. Ofcom have done their best to ensure fair play and shared responsibility in this area.
