As stated above, your attendance is not guaranteed, but if your application is successful you will be contacted to register, for which there will be a small fee of £60 for a boat with the majority of adults making up the crew and £40 for a junior crew (including one responsible adult – juniors are from 10 -17 years of age)

It occurs to me that these celebrations could offer an excellent opportunity to establish a new Waterway Charter for the Thames ........... but I am not holding my breath.

Methinks this will be a weekend to enjoy boating on a different stretch of the river.

Its not a race and it will be a celebration of the Magna Carta. Powered and unpowered boats can get involved.

Message to EA - don't not under any circumstances even consider closing or even restricting the river!!

How much of the £60 per boat will go to EA?....that's what I thought...

Well each boat taking part will need a navigation licence so the EA will get a fair chunk of cash. The event organisers costs will be considerable so you can't begrudge them that!!

So does that mean that a single handed skipper pays £40 with no crew or am I reading it wrongly and the fee is paid to the motorboat owner to cover his/her fuel and time costs ?

£60 for the boat, irrespective of number of crew / occupants, UNLESS the entire complement comprises of juniors with one resonsible adult in attendance, then it's £40.

Looks like the "favoured" boats will be unpowered and would expect most boats to be Thames based anyway so not sure how the EA will be able to rake in "a fair chunk of cash" - in any case, a one weeks visitors licence for unpowered craft ( regardless of size) is a whopping £8.50 so no get rich quick opportunity there!

And wont there be extra demands on EA staff to man locks, patrol this area and police this event? I do think when these organisations come up with these bright ideas that they consider their impact on the people around them and make some contribution to the infrastructure. But then they are usually shellfish bastewards

Shrewth..... your definitely a glass half empty sort of guy!
Surely events like these justify lock keepers and patrols jobs, gives the river a higher profile as a leisure resource.
It will attract people to the river who will spend money nearby and boost the river economy, we need more of these sort of events.

Not at all,

You seem to mistake me for saying I don't want the event to occur, quite the opposite in fact.

But adequate resources must be put in place to run it, and they have to be paid for by the folks that will no doubt profit from it.

We will have to agree to disagree as always....

Hampton Court as well

Hampton Court palace celebrates 500 years this year and I believe Pageants are being organised for this event as well. 2015 looks like being a big historic year for the Thames
