Word seems to be spreading across the forums about this little deal that seems to help the RNLI by donating 50% of its advertising revenue to them .

All you need to do is download the search engine and maybe set them as your home page and the RNLI gets loads more wonga , anyone else done it ? or any reasons for not doing it ?

How about people doing it in aid of some of the independants. They provide exactly the same service on a local level. i.e a lifeboat with 24/7 availability and called out by the coastguard. But, unlike the RNLI, don't have a huge fundraising organisation.

I quite agree, I used to crew on an independent in Yorkshire and though local support is always very strong, it is at the same time a pretty small pool to draw on.

Unfortunately Magic Taxi only lets you pick one of it's listed charities... I think there is a list of about 15.

I make a point of making a personal donation to the local independent rescue close to my boat. Ryde Rescue.

Supporting Independent Lifeboats

Sadly, not all independent Lifeboat services are a fully declared facility, so which ones should we help? There is one in the North East which only went out once in a year, and they told me that even that wasn’t necessary, they just felt the need to justify themselves.

Moreover, whilst one can admire the spirit of such organisations, there are some other factors to consider.

One is that their level of equipment and training cannot be as good as the RNLI’s. They do struggle to generate funds, but it cannot deliver the same standard of equipment, maintenance, and most importantly, training, in the same way that the RNLI’s very successful fundraising can deliver.

Secondly, I know that the RNLI regularly reviews its coverage of the coast, and for as long as independents are operating in a particular area, the RNLI will surely not see a need to introduce its own presence. You could therefore argue that this is in fact a disservice to the community and sea users that are in the area.

Thirdly, often the public think that the fundraising efforts of local lifeboats are, in fact on behalf of the RNLI. I don’t suppose much effort is put into disabusing them of that notion!

Personally I don’t have a problem with independent services, just so long as there is something there, but having had conversations with a few there appears to be a puerile hostility and jealousness amongst some; with others just wishing the RNLI would accomodate their requests to be taken over.
