maggi chain repair link - anyone used

I've inherited about 4 lengths of 8mm chain. none quite long enough to do the job for the main, and all a bit long for the kedge (IMHO etc)

So I'd like to go from 30m to 50m on the main anchor - extending would be cheaper than buying a new lot for 300 quid.

has anyone used the maggi repair link and was it easy to fit?

Maggi make good stuff so it should be OK. However, the force required to make it up gives a good guide. If the rivets deform with a few blows from a 1lb hammer the link is soft and will be weaker than the chain. If it takes heavy blows from a 4lb hammer it is hardened and tempered and will be excellent. If it is the latter type the advice on the Jimmy Green website to weld it is totally incorrect. Welding would destroy the temper that gives it its strength.

If in doubt, buy the Crosby one after reading the page on C-link testing on my website.

Have used several over the years. Never had any problems of failures. Use a lump hammer as an anvil (on a solid surface if possible and 2lb engineers hammer for riveting .
