Hello!
My Boat experience starten 2007 when I bought a Sea Ray 220 Sunsport. Two years later i upgraded to Sun Sport 240. When the children grow older my boating interest also started to grow. In the spring 2011 I happened to se a boat at an auction (without the family knowing anything) and I bought it as a family surprise ........ It was a Jeanneau Prestige 34s from 2005 in not so good condition! Last Winter I made some extensive fixing on the boat and before this summer it was in excellent condition.

BUT with the whole family on the boat it felt to small……

After this summer I decided it was time for a new family surprise…. I looked at a lot of different boats and initially I dident want it to be a flybridge….. and wanted the interior to be in modern style.

Initially I was most interested in Azimut 43S because I really liked their interior design and I liked the look. After a lot of thinking I decided for the Azimut 43 flybridge that has the same interior design as 43S but also a very nice flybridge. The only problem is that there are very few of that model I Sweden so I started to look around….. after some time I went to Finland to look at a 43 flybridge from 2006 and with just over 200 hours on the meter. After some initial problems the deal was sealed and now the boat is in a warm building in Sweden ready for some fixing.

My goal is to put the boat in excellent condition for this spring. I really like high tech solutions and would love to hear your opinions on what I am planning. My plan is that the boat shall me in water in mid April 2013.

This is what I plan to do:
I would love to have some ideas from you about about this!

Bow and stern thrusters
Today the boat has a side-power bow thruster (not enough power) and a QL stern thruster. Both thrusters works without any problems but I have decided to change both to 2x Side-Power SEP 100/185 with DC control. Today the controls is placed really bad and that I can fix. I like the ”hold” function and the variable speed on the new Side-Power thrusters. I was very interested to choose the hydraulic thrusters from Sleipner because I really liked the installation in jfm´s yacht but maybe in the next one….

Batteries & Genset
I will choose a complete system from Victron, probable the combined charger/inverter Quattro 24/5000/120A and let they redo the complete installation.

The battery bank today is a disaster with 2x220Ah in bad shape.
The Genset is a EMI 60 (6KW) with a 2 cylinder Perkins motor (3000 rpm). It works without any problems but I have not decided I shall change it to a more powerful genset and a smaller battery bank but I lean on choosing to keep the genset.

I think I will choose the new Lithium batteries from Victron because:
1. Less than 50% weight
2. Can use 80% of the battery bank
3. Has the same power all the way…
4. Quick recharge
It is quite expensive but I don’t like running the Genset during anchor/night.

Stern Anchor
I Sweden we often us stern anchors so I have to fit that on the boat. I previously installed a Engbo Maxi with leaded rope and it has worked on the Jeanneau so I think I will choose the same this time.

Cummings QSB
I have 2xCummings QSB 5,9 425 hk with only 215 hours on the clock but the but has not been in water the last 2 years so I will do a complete service including changing most of the tubes. I will also install a complete upgrade from sbmar.com including semax seawater pumps (weak point on this motor), crankcase ventilation, seamax multi-stage fuel filters.

Interceptors
I am thinking abot to change the existing trim tabs to the more powerful interceptors from humphree to improve the boats position in low speeds.

Underwater light
I will install 4x Lumishore thx120-ccp

And a lot of other small stuff…….

Johann, this looks a beautiful boat, congratulations. I really like the Azi style. The upgrades are interesting, and you should have plenty of room to fit a 10+ kw generator. It is also useful to have a bit of battery back up, probably similar capacity to what you have now, 400+ ah for those a occasions when the gennie cannot be used. I can't comment on the bow/stern thrusters, as I only have Vetus experience to date.

Hi rafiki!
Du you think it is a better solution to fit a larger low rpm genset instead of big 24v lithium bank?
I like the possibility to use a lot of electricity without having the genset working.

Yes I think this will give you more flexibility, but have sufficient battery bank for a few hours.

I saw that I missed to say that the new lithium-Ion bank should be 3-4x190Ah 24Volt.

Here comes some pictures

This should give you plenty of back-up power.

She is a gorgeous boat. :D

Thanks! I really like the layout but there is a lot of small fixes to do :)

Johann, there is always something to improve or fix on a boat. It is a labour of love. When the boat is as fine as yours, then I think you will enjoy the work.

We too are looking for an Azi, albeit a bit smaller than yours. We are looking for a 39. I think their styling is stunning.

Congratulations on new boat; this sounds quite a nice project. some thoughts on your list:

1. Thrusters - all sounds good. I hardly ever used the "hold" function on Match1 but I did find the variable speed very useful. If you let the speed build slowly it doesn't cavitate as much, and also if you run it at about 60% no-one knows you are using it :). Side-Power quality is excellent all round, and good back-up if you need it. Very trustworthy company imho

2. Genset - personally I'd prefer to fit a Cummins Onan 1500rpm about 11kw, but I do not know if you have the space/access. I'd also fit 150+ amps of 24v charging. Then you can "refill" the batteries in the 30mins you need the genset for cooking lunch. I personally do not bother with Li batteries right now but that would be a nice upgrade. On both Match 1+2 I have 250amps @24v of battery charging (switchable; 150 main and 100 second charger) and so I do not need Li becuase a genset runs enough hours in the day for cooking and that keeps the batteries full. Also on match2 I have autostart on one genset so it can run for 20mins at night to refill the batteries if the refrigeration (inverter) load is high but this isn't very necessary and is perhaps a waste of £2k to be honest... BTW, your 2x220A - is that @12 or 24v?

3. Those QSB engines get good reports - Latestarter on here loves them

4. Humphree interceptors - I wouldn't bother till i had used the boat for a season and felt how she behaves with ordinary tabs. I need to be convinced they are as good as Humpree say...

5. Lumishore THX 120s - a very fine choice. Best in world. you don't cut any corners do you? :D :D

Anyway, that's a fabulous boat. I hope the project goes very well

The Azi 39 fits the 11kw genset as std, so there should be plenty of room in the Lazarette on the 43.
