Serial to USB adapters are very hit and miss with most navigation applications and GPSs. The problem lies with the system driver and the application software driver interface.
In particular I know the Belkin adapter is almost impossible.
I strongly advise that you look at pcmcia serial adapters as I have not heard of any that don't work.
To anyone contemplating a serial to usb interface I suggest you take along the laptop and gps to the store and try the interface before buying.

hi,
try changing the, cant remember what its called, neam sentence.
i had micrologic and maxsea was fine on the standard sentence.
when i changed to c-map navigation, as it was an older system it required a different version.
or try enabling the port to except from your gps.
sometimes if your using many applications that use same port you have to manually switch they on and off.

Came across a usb to serial adaptor from "Time" at £14.99 - Prolific chipset and it works Ok with 98se as does another from easysync.co.uk which was c.£24. The driver installation can cause problems and you have to ensure that once the driver is imstalled that you do have another comport! If not you'll have to check out the install process. Once you can see in device manager that the new comport is recognised you must then ensure that MaxSea is checking that comport. Of course your gps is speaking in nmea and not in Magellan? Sometimes the gps appears to windoze as another mouse because of "pnp" which can be turned off! Make sure gps is switched off whilst pc boots can sometimes get around this.

The belkin works fine for me (but I write the software I use). The key element was being able to set the software to look at COM port 15 - lots assume only four ports or so.
