I was on the boat over the week end and had a play with the Magellan hand held Sat/Nav.

Despite putting new batteries in - it still didnt pick up any Satellites to give a fixed position.

I don't think it is knackered, could the reason be linked to the current situation in the Med etc.

Just a thought.

How long was it turned on? If it had lost it's ephemeris data it can take a long time ( several hours ) to receive and store new tables.
Good point it - has been in the chart drawer for the past six months. Next week end I'll switch it on and leave it overnight, hopefully that will make it re set itself.

Many thanks

I hav an old magellan (circa 1998) If not used for a year or so ,I switch it on once a year ! In the menu there is a startup option , you have to specify aprox location and set the time , or it takes itself a day to find itself!

Mine does the same - circa 1997. No satellites, never been able to get it to find itself again. Gave it about 4 hours with no result, and tried entering initialising data, but to not effect. or does it need longer? Worked perfectly to about 3 years ago, then left for 6 months unused. Since then nothing, so have just left it in the cupboard.

Can it be 'recovered'?

It takes ages for those older handhelds to find the sats,I left one with new batteries on the top of the radar arch for almost 12 hours before it found its three sats.Don.t let the batteries go flat !!!

Same here with my old Magellan GPS Pioneer (which became the GPS300)

After a year of not being used, it simply refused to work at my house.

Later, I took it walking with me up a mountain, and left it turned on, and it then did find a signal.

I think the trick, if it has lost it's database, then it needs a very very clear view of the sky, not the obstructed view of the sky it gets from my back garden.

Take it out on the boat in open water, or just out in a completely open space and leave it for a while.

Once it has come back to life, keep the batteries fresh, and turn it on every couple of months, and it should be fine.

Ah thank you chaps, this explains why the somewhat elderly Magellan GPS my brother has donated to the boat wouldn't play ball this afternoon!

Used mine on Friday last (2000XL) after 6 months, same batteries, couldn't get it to reset so input a MOB position to start it up and was connected in 2 minutes at home in the garden. It had saved all the routes and landmarks in memory too, which can often be lost if no new batteries are installed after 20 minutes.

I couldn't remember where I had switched it off so was unable to re-input the last position hence the MOB function used.

I put in and save a HOME or BOAT location and if left off for months, these can be used to help it pick up the satellites quicker.
Putting in the correct date also helps.

My Magellan 320 does that, too - UNLESS ...

My Magellan 320 does that, too, after the batteries go flat- UNLESS - having put new bat's in, I input my approx lat and long. Doing this enables it to look for the appropriate satellites and it "finds itself" in well under 2 minutes. Of course, it has to be located somewhere where it can "see" the satellites.
