I Recently purchased a yacht and inherited the above GPS unit . It seems to do the job so would like to stick with it. The manual tells me I can link to my laptop to upload and download waypoints and the like using Valpoint Software. I was wondering if any one could point me in the right direction to locate a copy. Any help very welcome as I'm new to this "Passtime".

Join the GPS Nav group .... look at my signature below and click on the link. It's free to join and only needs a Yahoo ID which you do online.

As to upload / download waypoints etc. There are a lot of software out there that will do just that to any GPS as they near all talk in same language - NMEA 0183

Taking it further - you can use the GPS to feed data to your PC and have superior chart plotting ... so enjoy both worlds ...

Welcome allan3. I don.t know anything about laptops, uploading ,downloading or any of those mysteries but there are lot,s of Formurites who do, prepared to be informed from a great height! What intriuges me if you are new to sailing it,s impresive that you have a 31ft sailing vessel as your first boat. I,m a "Stinkie", your a "Raggie"(terms you will come to understand on here) so I don,t understand how to sail. However I think I might( when I get older ) get a Cat, cos they don,t lean, that,s for SWMBO sake (my excuse). So tell us pray, is the boat on your profile your first?. If so you must keep us Posted all about it and your adventures. One day I might meet you on "The Dark Side"! Again you soon know what that is! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As Nigel says, the beauty of having the laptop goes way beyond just uploading waypoints.
You can drive a laptop plotter with a set of charts from your magellan GPS.
You get laptop screen size charts either raster, (admiralty printed type) or Vector, (interactive type), the world is your oyster really.
If you already have the laptop and GPS, then your laptop is just crying out for some navigation software, and you dont have to pay a fortune these days.

Take a look at these sites to see what is available.

As suggested join the GPS group, there are quite a few of us on there including some people from the navigation sofware companies where you can get lots of specialised advice.

Hope these suggestions help, and welcome to the forums.

Steve.
