I bought a Magellan Explorist XL handheld chartplotter last year and am really pleased with it - rugged, intuitive and a large screen.

However, what's not so good is the cartography. While you can pick up a detailed map these days for the whole of the UK from the other makes at a pretty reasonable cost, it seems that the Magellan Mapsend is both limited and expensive. I have the UK South version and am planning a jaunt up to the Western Isles in a couple of weeks, and have found myself geographically and financially stymied.

Has anyone had experience of this and can anyone guide me in the right direction?

Many thanks

Nick

Oh man - I had major troubles with the cartography. I loved the Explorist but the charts were c**p. They had the whole of the South West marked in red dots as a military practice area - so much so that the charts were almost unreadable. I got passed around the system for 6 months trying to get an update or at least someone to admit there was a problem. In the end the retailer accepted the unit back and I bought a Standard Horizon CP180!

Have a look at compass24 they seam to advertise the charts at a reasonable cost. We use ours locally for day sailing but when venturing further a field we resort back to our cut down laptop, navionics deck mounted 15" monitor and pc plotter.
