Bought a Magellan eXplorist XL hand-help marine plotter in 2007 and its my only source of electronic navigational assistance aboard.

It uses BlueNav XL3 charts on small SanDisk chips.

I have a chip that saw us home from Nice back to Cork and another for Ireland and south west UK.

Looking to get one for Iberia - XL G31 (Atlantic coast of France) and one for the UK - XL G23

However it seems that Magellan are now out of the marine charts business (that's what I was told) and I cant source one on the internet.

So,

1. Any ideas, please, on where I might source these elusive chips?

2. With further cruising abroad planned, would it be better to cut my loses and change to a new option, and if so, what should that option be?

Thanks, in advance for any assistance.

Bluenav XL3

Try ebay but don't limit your search to Europe.

Support for obsolete Magellan GPS is poor now Thales (parent co.) have shut their French operation.

I think Garmin have "seen them off" in Europe.

I know it sounds an expensive option, it might be worth selling the Magellan and starting again.

I used to use and Explorist XL but found the screen impossible to view in sunlight.

Explorist XL Charts

I have an Explorist XL as well and think it is excellent - including seeing the screen in sun light. Magellan, however, are completely useless I find.
I was looking at their site about 3 weeks ago - it may have been a US site - and all their charts were listed as available on SD cards much to my surprise. Probably not updated recently I suspect but there all the same. It's frustrating because when I spoke to Bluenav at Excel they said they could produce updates very easily but aren't allowed to in the format required by their old contract with Magellan.
