Hi all,

We’re thinking of spending the winter in Madeira and/or the Canaries, for various reasons (mostly climate!)...

I would love to hear your collective wisdom and experiences about marinas/anchorages on the islands that would be good for a 42’ to liveaboard for about 6 months... I have a small preference towards marinas.

Any links would also be gratefully received!

Cheers all!

Hiya. We partially live aboard our yacht in Marina Rubicon, Lanzarote. It's my favourite of all the Canaries marinas but of course that's subjective. They do up to 40% discounts on six month up front payment. Includes water and electric plus not wonderful wifi.

We did live for two years once on our boat in Puerto Calero. Very nice but a bit isolated with no car.

The newest Marina is up in Arecife. Again good deals for winter. We just sold our other boat to a chap who is now living aboard there. Delivered her up there last week, there are a couple of pontoons full of liveaboards wintering, nice buzz to the place but a fair old hike for victuals. It's called Marina Lanzarote.

Cheapest of all is up in the small island of Graciosa. Lovely place but might feel a bit restrictive after a month or two.

Others to look at that I like are Gran Tarajal on Fuertaventura, Puerto Mogan on Gran Canaria and the charming Marina on Gomera. One I hear about but not been to yet is Tazacorte on La Palma.

Do beware though, the winter is much milder than North Europe but January and February can feel cool and gets rainy.

Good luck with your choice!

I wintered in Madeira a couple of years ago. Marina was Eastern end Quinta de Lordo. The staff are absolutely fantastic and couldn't do enough to help out. They would keep an eye on the boat when I wasnt there. Checking power supply every day, offered to was boat once a week and went on board to check interior.

It is in a hotel complex so if you have a nice facilities to. If I recall they would collect you from airport. Not so expensive either. I think we paid €4k for 3 months for a 75' yacht including water and electricity. some cruising ground as well. It is fairly close to Canaries if you want a change.
