Why has nautical jousting never caught on in the UK?

Don't try and kid me you're too young to remember "It's a Knockout"?
That was the one where you dressed up as a giant gnome while six men dressed as chickens rowed the boat, simultaneously hurling wet sponges at teh opposition.

Well - could be we're sane ... or not - more likely the water's too d****ed cold !

<hr width=100% size=1>a pragmatist is an optimist with a boat in the UK - but serious about not being in the UK !

One reason that springs to mind is cold polluted seas. When I was in practice, I had patients who wind-surfed from beaches on the South Coast, and all of them reported stomach infections due to swallowing seawater. So I never swim in UK waters. Too cold for me as well.
Mind you, I certainly had mouth-fulls of seawater when I learned to windsurf, and I survived that. So I must have been braver/tougher in those days!
