reading through these posts a few weeks back and someone mentioned a mackerel lure that sounded like a no fail way to catch them,i think it was something like hydrovane or similar.
i have not fished for about 15 years but i do fancy a few tasty mackerel i do.
thankyou

Whenever we've caught mackeral while sailing, we've used a "spinner" or "feathers". Those might be random names my brother gives them, but the spinner looks like a piece of metal angled so that is spinds and reflects light. The "feathers" are pieces of plastic which have shiny patterns on.

The best day we had was whilst sailing at 3/4 knots of Wittering when we caught about 40 or so in an hour !!! We were just pulling them in 3/4 at a time !!!!

As i say.. thats what's been in use whenever we've caught mackeral, unforutnately can't say we've always caught mackeral when using that lure ;-)

Good luck.

youre lure is not a lure atall but is a piece of tackle that takes youre lure down to a depth that the fish are swiming at while you are sailingit definatly works at speeds up to 6 knots ive had one for years available at all tackle shops Kieron /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have always used the common spinners usually with success particularly when sailing slower however remember seeing device in pbo "bright ideas section" that was a type of reverse hydrofoil working as Kieron describes - have not been able to find either the magazine or a ready made one in the fishing shop though.

6 knots!? You obviously have bionic mackerel around your way. The lazy Cornish ones cannot be bothered to chase anything much faster than 3 knots. That said however, they will go for just about anything coloured or shiny, including bare hooks!

Hi Paul,

We just put a normal spinner on the trace from our paravane and do rather well with mackerel!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers Jerry

Mackerel are the most stupid greedy fish around If there are mackerel there they will be caught on almost anything, the simplest is a set of feathers available in any fishing tackle shop. . I find the trouble if you are going more than about 3 knots is getting the lure down to the depth the fish are at .

Look what we caught on feather lures, trolling at 3 knots on the 10 metre contour.
