in light of recent events in china do you think that if the chandlers had been smuggling drugs the british government/royal navy might have been more supportive of them?and have made greater efforts to obtain their release?

Probably not. The Chandlers are middle class non ethnics. Which is an answer as cynical as your question and about as serious.
Both episodes illustrate the UK govt's self imposed powerlessness. In neither case have they offered more than Foreign Office woffle, and the FO are the arch appeasers. Their lack of guts has got us into wars before now, as it did in the Falklands.

Yes, the UK is a spent force both economically and morally and will remain so as long as we have an idiot like Gordon Brown in nominal charge (we all know it's Peter Mandelson really).
Gordon Brown is only interested in Gordon Brown and like his predecessor wants to make a name as an International Statesman. Hence give away lots of money and apologise to everybody.
Our forces are amongst the best if the world and could easily sort out the problem if the Government had the B*lls to let them.

1) with regard to the execution of the drug smuggler, what else would you wish the UK govt to do? Invade China to release him? Send the SAS in to break him out?

With the drug smuggler: Instead of seeking clemency the Government should have declared that anyone breaking laws abroad suffers the punishment chosen by the country in which the law was broken. Not a single minister seems has acknowledged the simple point that the majority in this country believe smuggling 4kg of heroin is wrong and should be punished severely.
With the Chandlers: Previous posts have suggested there was a time when decisive action was possible. This has been missed, so the shameless Government go silent on the problem and hope it will be forgotten.

Which is the point at which their kidnappers will give up hope of a big payout and settle for a much smaller ransom which will leave the Chandlers something reasonable over from the sale of their house. Result.

So, as I sit here (and I know a thing or two about what is going on), where are the chandlers, its gone very quiet..... firstly, I am a cruiser, secondly I understand the people that have taken them, they are in trouble. But that is their fault. we dont go anywhere without a little help (unwelcome visitors beware), why were they asleep, we never sleep at sea, especially in such waters. We expect to get ourselves out of trouble and have done in the past, a UK passport means nothing now, when will people learn. Sorry, but if the government intervenes then we are all at more risk than ever before, when will you all grow up and learn, the world is not a nice place, live with it.
