Spending a night on the peaceful piles off Town quay. Some inconsiderate t***t comes along and starts generator totally spoiling the peace. If it's your Aqua Star Ocean Ranger 33 please show some consideration to your fellow boaters.

Man up and go tell him.

Agree with Seastoke here. If the gennie was turned off at a reasonable hour, then what's the problem? If still running in the early hours then I would ask the perp to turn off!

Had a similar problem on return to our home berth in Lymington last week, but in this case it was a wind gen whirring about three feet over our cockpit. If you have neighbours, you have the potential for annoyance. Pour another glass and ignore it seems the best solution. Mind you, if the opportunity arises every so often for a little bit of revenge - could you help with casting off our lines - fu is satisfying from time to time too.

Curently rather exasperated by the visiting flotilla of tramp like raggies who appear to think that the pontoon at the back of our boat is a suitable place for a drinks party, blocking the access for the rest of us as well as the noise of their braying, but hey ho all part of a bank holiday in the Solent I suppose.

So it's OK to run it all day untill 22.00!!

Was it really running till 22.00? I don't think many would hear my gennie if run during the day. Of course it could be obtrusive at night, so I wouldn't dream of doing so. In fact I don't think I would run it for more than a couple of hours at a time.

Our neighbours at Mercury were party animals but considerate with it as they always apologised in advance and said it anything is a problem then let them know, it never bothered us and they never went on any later than 22-00, it was good to see people enjoying themselves.

I've fitted an Akrapovic straight through exhaust this season to my Kohler generator. It releases a whole extra 0.05hp but the important thing is that I can now properly hear that fabulous twin cylinder Harley Davison like burble echoing across the anchorage when I fire her up. I've had nothing but compliments from my fellow yotties. Well at least I assume their friendly hand signals are compliments

:D:D (PS just got an Akra for the 10R last week, will be bolting it when we get back next week... :D)

Hooligan........

Nah, wuss I'd say. I told him where he could get that crotch rocket of his re-mapped to about 250hp and he bottled it. Some nonsense about wanting to stay alive:D

I don't see the problem unless it was on all night. Our geni is practically silent and exhausts below the water line so its totally muffled. Compared to a halyard slapping the mast of an adjacent yacht in the early hours a geni is not irritating at all.

Now if some twat starts one of those portable genies outside on deck after 10pm I suppose I might get slightly irritated as they are noisy.

Yes, a well installed generator should be all but silent. We've left ours running before now because we couldn't hear it and forgot!

I can't immediately find the recommended cut off time for generators at Lymington but it won't be before 10.00pm.

Boat heating, halyards clanking & the like are far noisier than our generator. I'm very conscious and have been known to go out in the dinghy just to make sure it can't be heard by nearby boats. I think your issue was with the type of generator.

Henry :)
