Should they be able to look at profiles and other such stuff ? Surely there's no incentive to actually join and log in if they can peep for 'free' so to speak ?

I changed mine cos I ended up on a search engine results page. Didn't like that idea at all.

Quite agree. I'm all for freedom, that's why I enjoy sailing so much but there are some things that unfortunately, need to be policed because of all the weirdo's and Bernie Ecclestone types out there.

Sorry, some off us are lurkers at work! I always log on when at home but when at work (on lunch honest) I check out ybw.com without signing in.

Had a quick look at the moment there are 9 Anonymous people reading user profiles.
We are either very interesting people here, or there are a lot sad people about.

Tis true, don't think its too much to ask for only registered users be allowed to view. The Ad Hoc and virtual pub things are only viewable if your regidtered. Not that means anything anyone can register to the forums. For all you know I could be a right nerdy internet type hell bent on finding any info about you I can to hatch a darstardly plan..........I know you drive along the A3........just look in your rearview mirror. I might be the maniac driving behind you with that vacant look in my eyes boring holes in the back of your head with my manic stare

you could look on them as a silent fan club,

All these people to shy to come forward,

To scared to take a ER hum negative comment or to,

think they do not know enough to contribute,

Or they may be a worse Speller than me, but that would be hard /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Pauline, You remove some details from your profile but then your signature links to your photo pages!?!

On powerskippers good point, personally, i find there is a lot to learn from you more vocal/lyrical posters. Even though it is mostly good juicy gossip, jibes etc, there is still interesting and pertinent points amongst it.
You can learn a lot by listening. I have.
I post where i can, but I do not, in any way claim to be a good or experienced mariner - yet. But i'll add my point on other boat or techonlogy matters where i can

It could be that they belive in the saying - "By keeping ones mouth closed you may be thought a fool, opening it only serves to confirm the fact" /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Most other boards I look at the supression of the ability to view profiles is normal until logged on, I was surprised, when I found this board, that it was different.

Re: Lurkers - confession and apology to solitaire

I confess to being a lurker. I did register a while ago and posted a question. Thanks for the replies, especially to solitaire who after I sent him a PM kindly offered me his tel no so I could speak to him about fairline sprints. Unfortunately I don't usually use forums and didn't understand about PMs and expected his reply to come to my email. Thought he'd ignored me but it turns out I'm the one who has been unintentionally rude to him and his kind offer. I only saw his reply after I felt guilty about the lurker thread and logged on. Erm.. abit sad for an IT manager I think.
About the lurking business, I just go on at work and read the forum as I want to soak up as much info as possible before buying a boat (now going to remortgage house to fund boat - this is starting to get out of hand). I don't feel confident enough to post anything as I'm sure my knowledge about boats could quite easily be transferred to a pin head with room to spare. But now I will log on first. Off now to soothe my slapped wrists. Oh and thanks for all the info. couldn't get through the day without this as a stress reliever.

But have only just got up!!!
Looking to see what went on whilst in the land of nod.
I do agree that perhaps the profiles ought to be only available for registered users.
And yes I am at work and logged on!!!!!
