Do you have any lucky charms on board or rituals you perform before casting off, like emptying pockets of change in case you fall overboard ?

I always empty my pockets before casting off and
I have a 22ct Gold St Christopher on my steering wheel, ignored most of the time how ever it tends to grab my attention when climbing tsunami size swells or staring into thick fog

One sunny weekend in St Kats dock, spent some time trying to focus on small soggy object floating on surface of water. After a few hours decided to oik it out with boat hook.It turned out to be a stuffed parrot/vulture/hawk (your choice) with a velcro wrap to go round your wrist.
As we were parked next to that theme place in west dock assumed that some heartless Long John Silver had jettisoned his bird into the drink.
"Vicious Vinny" the parrot/hawk survived a further dunking in the washing machine and now goes proudly where we go,normally perches on the dashboard, but sometimes on my wrist when young ladies get the benefit of my legendary pirate impression. :)
If that fails to raise smile have a neat elephant impersonation

As I am new to these forums I thought I'd make my first post an easy one.

Ritual? Possibly.
Before I set off down the finger dock I always stash my car/house/boat keys, my mobile, cigarettes and my wallet in a tupperware container.
If I do happen to drop in at least those things are dry/safe and the tupperware container will float.
Second ritual, get the kettle on.

Yes, I have a "lucky Liferaft" in the aft cabin somewhere. We haven't sunk since I started carrying it around.

Mind you we didn't sink before either.

I did have a "lucky phone" but that did sink when I dropped it overboard, so I guess it wasn't that lucky after all.

Phone always come out of pocket as soon as I am aboard and there is a pound coin in the bilge somewhere. Always has been, always will be. I find it on occasions when cleaning out the bilge, it always goes back.

A lucky shoelace, I used as back up to tie my gopro camera to the windscreen should the suction fail. The one time I couldn't find my lucky shoelace I lost my gopro overboard after not mounting it properly to the windscreen. Annoyed would be an understatement.

Sainsbury's carrier bag!

In our family, every trip to anywhere seems to include a Sainsbury's carrier bag so its become both a family joke and a lucky charm.

Must have all sorts of practical uses too .........

Bright orange storm kite if the engine fails
sea anchor
placed over a torch could be used as a port light
filter change
sick bag
Q flag
flexible bailer
inflate to bung a hole .

Have you ever needed it ?

I'm going to get one

when I had a petrol boat I used to carry a lucky jerry can full of petrol :)

might not be so lucky if it gets stuck in the bilge pump

You missed

"Emergency Prop Cover" for the trailer
"Camera Waterproof Storage"

both of which it has been used for!

I don't but I found a US quarter in the bilges once that someone must have put there. Should have been a silver dollar but it was doing the job

Love the picture Daka. Throttles hard on the stops, 4000rpm and I think 32.7kts on the GPS (or is it the 56.1?). Were you expecting raggies? :)

The whole thread was a scam so I could copy your lucky charm in the hope my boat would grow a few meters :)

Alderney race ,
3900 rpm 32.7 knts with 56 nm to next wp (needles or studland)?
Wife gets a bit wobbly just before we cross the channel so I push the throttles forward and tell her we will be there in under two hours ;)

There is one poor soul in the distance (about 2.5 minutes away) but just off the sights. He simply has no idea what is about to hit him . . . poor fool.

Point of order :)

Despite him being on my port side and too far away to be able to ascertain if he is motoring , I have already started to give him a wide berth, the gps says I am already .21 NM off track , my heading should be 12 degrees but I am on a course of 29 degrees, thats a wide berth for deep water and I doubt my bit of wash would bother that sailor, he is French and they dont mind a few waves, the French seem to to be a tougher breed of sailors than the softies who play on the river solent .

Relax, I was only teasing, it is obvious you are giving it a decent offing. But would anyone pass up an opportunity like that to tease me? I hope not anyway! :D
