Hi, I am nearing the point of trying to start my recently put back together 1948 Stuart Turner. The magneto power needs strengthening, a not uncommon problem I understand as there is natural degradation over time. The Saving Old Seagulls site describes a technique for the seagull magneto which can be effective at zero cost! Namely using a drill for about 4 minutes to spin the magneto very fast to achieve some gain back in magnet strength (I am not sure why this works??). Anyway, would this work on a Lucas Magneto - worth a 'spin' or is there any risk of damage?
 
I got 4% in my physics exam at University (the tutor told me it must be harder to get 4% than 100%...) so I'm not qualified to answer.

I do know that its possible to re-magnetise the flywheel on a Lambretta engine using a special bit of kit, I guess its possible to do a magneto.
 
I know that it is hardly convenient to you, but there is a place here in Melbourne where they restore magnetos. The machine which restores the magnetism is evidently huge, but the results are astounding. The magneto for my brother's vintage Alvis will throw a half-inch spark with just a flick of the drive shaft. Are there any advertisements for magneto servicing in magazines serving the veteran and vintage motoring community? Weak spark is the cause of much unreliability in motors. A motor with a healthy spark will be eager to run, and will pull like a draught-horse. Don't forget to replace the high-tension leads, too. Use the newer carbon - impregnated core type, as these cannot corrode like the old copper-cored ones.
