Decided to change the water impeller on my KAD32 today as the boat will be going back in the water in less than 4 weeks. I know you should leave this until the boat is going in the water but I just wanted to have it over and done with

BTW I removed the whole assembly to change the impeller - It was only a 2 nut job - Thanks YBW for that tip, made life so much easier!

Now I used the lube that came with the impeller but when it was in I sprayed in some fairy washing up liquid and gave it a few turns. Since I won't be using it for 2-3 weeks, is it OK to just leave teh Fairy in there? I know to expect a foamy water outlet for a minute, but other than that is it OK? If needs be I Can drop the boat in the water tomorrow and give it a run

I thought you weren't supposed to use Vaseline (on impellers)! Apparently not good for the stuff they're made of. Anyone care to confirm or otherwise?

Didn't have any KY to hand sorry /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I figured it would be OK, i'll bring it for a blast next week if I get a chance

I used the lube that came with it but just stuck in a bit of Fairy for extra measure, literly only a couple of drops

fwiw ...
Make sure that on launch the water has actually reached the impellor, if its above the water line, so it doesnt run dry just moving the air around etc. It can and does sometimes and in time water can also drain back leaving impellor dry - hence the need to check strainer is full of water before a trip.

From what i've seen before (I check strainer before and after each trip) on the KAD32 the strainer dries over a period of time due to gravity

However on initial launch this season i'm going to run her on muffs to make sure that water is getting up there. This will be evident by water coming out the leg.

Use silicone grease which is waterproof and stay in situ and not wash away from the drive shaft spline that you slide the impellor onto. The lube is there to assist removal next time you need a change

From now on any impeller change I do on a KAD, the housing will be removed.... it's way easier than trying to get an impeller pullers down there (well, on my boat anyhow)

I did notice that the coupler between the engine and the pump shaft was solid(ish) plastic. I'm guessing that this isin't designed to be changed but since it's plastic I think i'll change it next season anyhow
