Finally, 16 months after having an LPG conversion "carried out" on my boat by Riviera Boats of Torquay (which led to a failed engine, see previous posts) I had them in court.
Needless to say that after evidence from our expert (metallurgist)witness that the holed piston was a short term failure caused by detonation(the detonation being caused by incorrect ignition timing and mixture settings) I WON!
When we pointed out that the LPG mixer fitted was too small for the size of engine (Mercruiser 7.4ltr)in my boat and the throttle housing adapter they fitted was a very poor fit Riviera Boats claimed "we only fit the bits in the box,so MGS are to blame because they supplied faulty parts and instructions"!
They also admitted they had only done 4 others before mine and" the one after mine they had a problem with due to altering the timing, so they don't alter the timing anymore."
They and Darren Callaway of MGS (he is now in Oz) blamed a faulty piston, faulty spark plugs,a faulty injector but the mechanic remarked how well my engine ran before commencing the conversion.
Callaway's "expert witness" statement was ruled inadmissible as it only contained opinion, not fact.
They even tried to blame another component(a knock sensor ) during the case but ,the Judge was having none of it!
Their Barrister had the cheek to ask the Judge to take into account that if he awarded against them that I had saved a lot of money on fuel because my boat had been out of the water for quite a while!
My boat is now in full working order thanks to help from Gordon Finlay (www.Gordon Finlay-lpgconversions.co.uk)who supplied the correct LPG mixer for my engine. It did not need the timing altered because the correct parts were fitted.
Oh, by the way did I say that I had WON my court case,
