I have a vintage American-made Lowrance X4 "LCG Recorder" - and I have a manual......But the manual is impenetrable and the device itself - with its 32 buttons - is totally un-intuitive.

All I want to do is switch it on and have it tell me much water is underneath my keel.

All IT wants to do is draw profiles of the sea bed and flash "0" at me all day.

Is there any PhD out there who knows how I can get it give me the info I need?

sorry just reread the post, looks as though your transducer is Kaputt! or maybe needs cleaning, you are not getting a signal, from what I have read

ON EON]
The ON key is located in the lower right corner of the keyboard. It is
placed in this location so that it can be easily found—even at night. To
turn the X-4 on, press the ON key. An audible beep will be heard
signifying the X-4 knows that a key has been pressed. The chart lights
will begin flashing, then stop after six seconds. The chart will begin
scrolling across the display and the number "0" will flash. This number is
the digital bottom depth display After the unit has found the bottom, the
depth will be displayed.

No clue in the on-line manual about how the transducer is installed. They refer to separate instructions.

Before coming to the conclusion that the transducer is dud check its installation, ie bonding to the hull or oil bath if either of those are appropriate.

Also check the connections and wiring of the transducer.

The on line manual seems easy enough to follow, especially the section about switching on and allowing the unit to operate automatically.
