Last unit was a Navicom, no problems with voltage. With the engine running voltage is probably around 14-14.5 just like you'd expect. Without it will be around 13.6.
The thing is, this unit has worked at this voltage before. I tested it when I installed it on a nice sunny day with full solar power going into the batteries, and have run it multiple times since. Weird.
As you say, it seems like it might not be fit fo purpose which is annoying as I have a passage in a couple of days and will have to re-install the old one, that has AIS problems. Then find somewhere in to have a replacement sent to.
