Hi folks,
It seems there has been a lot of posts on the Lowrance plotters over the past year or so. I'm planning on heading away for a cruise in August, and was considering fitting one before then.

I've a few questions:

- Does anybody know if the 3600i will take a standard GPS aerial in the event that the internal one fails or cant get reception ? I'd prefer the handiness of the integrated aerial, but it would be usefull to be able to plug in the aerial from the standard GPS on board if reception on the integrated aerial is not good. (Users on the forum generally seem to report that the integrated aerial works just fine) The online manual doesnt say whether or not this is possible, and I havnt seen it discussed on the forum - Can anybody that owns one see if there is a jack on the back ?

- I noted some issues reported on the forum with the Unit freezing - something to do with the LGC 2000 GPS module. The integrated aerial version apparently doesnt have the LGC 2000 module (According to specs available online) - does anyone know if there are issues with the GPS freezing in the 3600i ? Have the 3500 issues been sorted out ?

- Has anybody seen or used the battery pack ? apparently there is a stand-alone power supply which takes batteries. This would make it easily installed (no cables, no drilling holes in deck), and easily moveable - does anyone have any experience of these ?

- Can anybody recommend an alternative plotter, having had experience of both the Lowrance and another "more expensive/better" brand ? I'm led to the Lowrance because of the price/value particularly when bundled with the integrated NauticPath charts - but I'd prefer to shell out the extra if there are compelling reasons to do so - any such reasons, and which brand/model should I go for instead ?

ps. the Boat is 27ft Sailboat, cruising is east & south coasts of Ireland, West coast UK, I dont want to buy more than one chart module if I can avoid it.

No there is no socket for an external aerial, but it can take the signal from another GPS unit if need be (through NMEA).

Had my unit for a couple of months, and had no 'freezing' issues.

Battery pack doesn't look really suited to boats as it would still probably have to be fixed somehow...

Definitively a good buy!

Marc.

thanks Marc-Andre,
I think I'll go for the internal aerial version, at least I can wire it to the GPS via NMEA for backup. I've just priced the Raymarine C70 display, which is twice the price (it needs an external GPS and charts have to be bought separately)....
regards,
Aidan.

I got the 3500 external aerial version. I have not had any freezing. I diden't see the external aerial as a problem on a yacht so went with that. The nautipath card is excellent value and has huge coverage.

3500 .... freezing ?

I haven't heard about this error ... can someone pass on an instance or example of this ?

So far I've had excellent performance from mine and expect it to continue so. When I get back in August - I shall be installing the update ... and that should hopefully cure the tide error that has been discussed by various.

Interesting to note that updates for 3600 are different from 3500 ...

Re: 3500 .... freezing ?

Hi Nigel,
thanks for all the info you put out on the forums..... the post I was referring to is here....
http://www.ybw.com/forums/printthread.php/Cat/0/Board/pbo/main/782994/type/thread
or
http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/782994/an//page/0/vc/1

for some reason I couldnt relocate it on the YBW Search, but found it by doing a google and searching for :
"lowrance 3500 site:www.ybw.com" - you might have used this before, it restricts the search to ybw.com.

Seems to happen when passing "passing big/military ships"... shouldn't be too hard for me to keep out of range of the Irish Navy though....

regards,
Aidan.

Re: 3500 .... freezing ?

Thanks for the effort to search .... will read them through later when I've got to work !

You say in passing military ships - could well be due to so much RF power coming out of them ? I know when I was on Seismic in N.Sea - we used to run up the coast from Gt Yarmouth .... there was a girt big defence coast radar up there - the cr*p is caused on our radar and radio gear was amazing ... it also interefered with our Nav gear reception while getting out to shoot area.
