The incident happened very close to the entrance to Lowestoft harbour. There are no lobster pots or buoys normally in that area. A marker buoy may have come from the stricken vessel itself.
Today's information from one of the men who was trapped in the wheelhouse was that it was very rough and two or three waves broke over the stern and events went from bad to dire in a few seconds.
It was a dive boat with eleven people aboard and one can only guess that if the waves were in over the back and the trim was upset the dive gear slid towards the stern and with all that weight shifting it was terminal in a trice.
When you consider what might have occurred if the boat had been half a mile further away and five minutes later....the lifeboat was heading into the harbour and was just passing the dive boat as it sank.
The chances of having a lifeboat a 100 yards away when disaster strikes must be a few million to one... there must be eleven men counting themselves to be very lucky.
