Lower End Oil

I have just purchased a used 1982 Johnson 4.5 HP outboard. I’m attempting to change the gear oil in the lower end but there only seems to be 1 drain plug at the bottom. I’ve searched and searched for a top plug but I don’t think there is any. Do I just lay the motor on its side and fill it up from the bottom? Or pump it in while it’s upright?

The parts diagrams show separate drain and level plugs for a 4.5

The owners manual should tell you how to fill it but I think this latter type is filled while lying on its side and only holds about 80 cm³

I have just changed the lower end oil on my 1980 Evinrude 4hp, Model No. E4BRCSS. I understand that it is basically the same as the 4hp Johnson. The manual certainly indicates that: http://www.marineengine.com/parts/e...ohnson-evinrude-model-number-guide-00001.html


There is only one plug. It is on the starboard side. The instruction manual simply says to remove the plug, turn the motor over and allow to drain down. The capacity quoted is 38cc of OMC Hi-Vis Gearcase Lube. It advises to fill slowly, allowing air to escape.

My only additional advice is to put the motor in a bucket of warm water to thin the oil before you drain it and to warm the bottle of fresh oil in as well to make it easier to pour.

Separate subject: there is a U shaped plastic fitting on the carb linkage that goes brittle after a few years. I've repaired it with a lump of epoxy. Milliput, I think. Other than that, a good reliable engine. Good luck with it.

Dull Spark's 1980 4hp ( E4BRCSS) is the same as my second diagram . If your engine is like this then follow his instructions

Think the The U shaped fitting he refers to is the cam follower . I agree dont try adjusting it ... It'll break if it has become brittle
