Hi All,

Based on a 1M Draught with a 2m safety clearance, I have found that I could use a closer inshore route and channel to get to Brighton and back from portsmouth, however I'm not sure whether to use it...

I usually use the outer boat passage and keep well away from an closer inshore route, after exiting portsmouth harbour. I keep roughly a 1-2nm distance before turning in.

Anyone used a closer to the shore route, and if so is this only for high tide?

Thanks

I've taken the inshore route a few times - it's not a good idea at low tide: charted depth is only 1m with a shallower patch to the East.
It's fine when there's a bit more water over it.

I don't think you save much by going that way, as the middle passage lines you up nicely to avoid East Winner.
With the inner route, you have to turn fairly smartly to the SE.

I've seen several boats going straight over the barrier: this to me is very scary. They're either "experts or idiots"
(upper end of a high spring tide with a shallow draught, you can put yourself in the "brave expert" category)
