The engineer has just told me hes taken off the fuel filter and found half a teacup of sludge in it and that he only changed the element(whats the element) when he serviced the engine and that now he has to take off all the fuel pipes and clean them surley he should have checked the fuel filter when he did the service.
He also says I need somesort of debug for this fuel tank any recommendations ?.
He says the fuel filters arent any good on this engine because theres no glass bowl to see the state of the fuel (yanmar 250s) comments ?
As soon as I ssuggest he might have dislodged the sludge whan doing the service he gets very defensive
Am i getting good service here ?or am I getting a bit had over

Soltron! does what it says on the tin (Well plastic bottle, anyway)

I use it, and IMHO it works - keeps my fuel tanks fresh and clean.

NB Someone here claimed it made you more popular with women, i could not test this due to being popular anyway. LOL

My instinct is that your man is OK. The element is a throw away screw on device with a filter in it. You will also have two per engine, One actually on the engine and one on the bulkhead. Both need changing once a year or if you have problems and it sounds like your man had changed at least one during the service. You have the 'bug' which the filter will filter out (and eventually block up) but not cure. I use a product called Soltron in every tank fill up and have no problems. See if you can contact hlb by searching on this forum...he will supply.
The glass bowl types are better (because you can look into them) but the conversion will cost you a few hundred squid.
hope this helps

You do not tell us a lot about yourself or the boat in your bio, please update us. If you are running diesels as I assume you are you really ought to have a pre filter in the line I would go for a CAV 296 with a glass bowl, due to the cost (automotive) rather than the (marine, arm and leg option), fit to bulkhead and run the fuel through it from the tank before it gets to the engine, they have a venturi on top and the fuel gets separated, the muck drops through into the collecting bowl which enbles you to see how crappy it is, also there is a drain plug on the bottom that allows you to drain off water. Soltron will help you if your tanks are badly contaminated, and will clean your pipe work ( speak to hlb), but the prefilters will save you a lot of grief.

Spot on. The only time we got bug, it came on out of the blue - absoluterly no warning, and the starboard engine couldn't manage full revs. Filter was solid with black sludge. Killed it off with some mental dose of biocide, then a load of Soltron, and we've used Dom's Magic Snake Oil religiously ever since. As Col will attest, when we pulled the filters this year after 160 hours of running, they went staight back on, being spotless.
