I'm having to buy a new stereo for the boat but looking through the technical specs they always seem more compelled to talk of music output than power consumption. I'm looking for something which delivers the goods without drawing a load of juice - has anyone any recommendations/knowledge to share?

TIA

two items draw the power - disc drive and amp. You can minimise the power use by having your music on an Ipod and have a stereo system that has a front connector for an ipod (less power than wireless connection. Main power requirement then is amp

On radio 4 at quiet volume, my Sony player draws 0.8amps. With the CD on blasting, it can reach 6.2amps. Only noticed as I fitted a DCM600 which happens to be next to the Sony unit.

6.2 amps! Bloomin 'eck! James Naughtie and Libby Purves turned down quiet and an Ipod then is the answer!

Thanks

Glad I read this post, I was just about to fit a cd player to my boat having removed it from the car I've just sold.
The one presently keeping me dancing on board is an old radio cassette which I use with my mp3 player and one of those fm transmitters. Guess the old radio cassette gets a stay of execution

I have a "small" Pioneer home cinema setup - 6 speakers - on my boat and it draws at least 4 amps at 24V. So it doesn't get used often.

I've just bought a Tevion car radio with CD and MP3 input, I'm hoping it will draw a lot less. No surround sound, but at least stereo. Problem is I haven't measured the power consumption yet.

BTW quoted music power doesn't bear much relation to the power input, and even watts RMS quoted isn't either

OOH! that's making me do a re-think. I've been thinking of upgrading the old car radio in my boat and thought of 4 x 6" x 4" speakers plus sub woofer using a USB connection for a memeory stick. I was also teampted to look at one of the new generation of radios that play DVD's and output to a remote screen. (I live aboard) Battery capacity is always a problem, maybe I'll look at the consumption figures a bit more carefully.

I bought one too!
I tried it out on the kitchen table and be warned the front panel is BRIGHT, BLUE and FLASHING!! Mine will be mounted next to the nav station so this is a bit of a problem for night sailing. There's a pin out at the back to dim the display which works well. So I'm planning on connecting this to the compass light via some fiendish diode logic. Work in progress.

oh Ho!!
You want to see the power when I turn on the 400W sub amp with the 14" subwoofer!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Makes Ride of the Valkyries worthwhile.

A foul slur on my impeccable reputation Sir!

I turn the cockpit speakers and the sub woofer off at anchor. Lower the volume to a background whisper in the saloon..

to be honest i thought a sub woofer was a small dog! I take it that it must be some mega loudspeaker of some sort!

I fitted a JVC DVD/Radio player and it's the dogs, (about £300 in March 2006)... whenever I'ved checked, it seems to draw about 1A at reasonable volume playing a DVD. DVD plays through LCD TV.
