I've a mate with a Voyager 40 in the Algarve who needs to get it back to Blighty. Does anybody know what the max dimensions are for yacht transport by road? Does anybody have any idea on costs?

TIA

I don't recall the exact dimensions, but am pretty sure that - in the UK at least - would be a 'wide load' requiring a police escort ( an exercise in revenue gathering IMHO, far preferable to catching villains  ).

Is it not possible to sail and / or motor the boat back ?

Well within limits. The critical dimension is height (for bridges). Had no problem with my Bavaria 37 from Southern Spain. Road transport is comparable in price to sea delivery with a professional crew and much easier on the boat. Think in terms of £5-6k plus cranage either end, but you may do better if you can get a return load.

Simon Butler www.boat-shift.com is very good and will give you a quote. There are many other transport firms - just Google and then email for quotes. Make sure your contractor is a specialist like Simon and has proper insurance. Experienced firms will also organise their own permits etc and choose the most economic route - not always easy because they cannot use motorways in France.

A couple of years ago my sister had a static caravan transported by low loader from Northumberland to the Algarve. She was told that, as it was over 3 metres wide, it needed a police escort in Portugal. The total cost including permits and escort etc came to £2500 cash in hand. I thought that was a pretty good deal.
