We want to have a custom fiberglass sailboat built by a boatyard in a country that offers low labor rates, i.e. Honduras, Taiwan, Turkey, etc. If you have any first hand knowledge of this subject, please email me. Thanks.

Thought you might get some PC rubbish replies.

If they had been to these countries they would know that with no unemployment or other benefits any job is better for the family than no job at all!

Taiwan?? Low Cost Labor!!!!!!

Have you been there recently? You are twenty years out of date!

There is a seriously good wooden boat yard in Thailand, run by an Australian, but I doubt if they would want to fit out a plastique when they are busy building real boats.

Some yacht building is now taking place in Mainland China - often managed by Taiwanese - you might look hard at that possibility.

Remember, though, that a yacht built by non-sailing people is bound to have a certain proportion of silly mistakes. Allow for this.

G'day Hawkey and welcome to the forum, I see this is your very first posting.

I would like to suggest a solution that will save from those complaining about not supporting the mother country; but with labour costs so high I think anyone would be on the look out for a cheaper alternative.

So............

Have considered approaching any of the educational organisations with a view to them providing the labour and providing the materials, they are always looking for projects to teach young shipwrights their trade, but end up working on old hulks. They may be very pleased to have someone supply all the materials, and, you would be making a contribution to the future skill base. Supervision of budding shipwrights is of a very high standard, and you may even be in a position to have her built to Lloyds charter standard.

Just a thought.....

Re: Approach to questions

You only have to compare two articles in the yachting press sin the last 12 months to see the different use of protective personal equipment (eg masks) between, say S Africa and a well known west european bulk boat builder.

At least some of us do not immediately resort to calling other people's expression of concern and opinion by cheap names. That is a really good way of stifling debate and openness.
