We decided not to take the boat out this weekend and instead spent some time giving her a clean.. popped over to the King and Queen in Port Hamble for lunch on Saturday to reward our efforts and found ourselves back over there in the Bugle for lunch today after spending some time with the lad catching crabs off the harbour wall.. lovely place, so thought we'd enquire about berthing costs.. £5,200 for our little 27 footer:eek: rising to £8,200 should our plans to go for a mid 30 footer come to fruition next year:eek::eek:

mmm, time for a rethink.. that's mightily expensive just to keep the boats bum wet 24x7

Outrageous really but I guess market forces are at work! Profit margins must be very healthy.

Sorry, but why does that surprise you? Hamble Point and Port Hamble are right in the mainstream of the boating world. Go further up river and the prices do reduce, but not by much. Go down to Lymington and ask them what their rates are.

Lymington is more? bugga, best start thinking plan C:rolleyes:

Come on up to the Itchen! It's cheaper (nearly £2000 less for my Antares 30:eek:) only 12 mins from the speed limit and much more friendly...even the yotties;)

yup. sure is expensive down that end of the river.

we have chosen to go to Mercury which is much quieter and very friendly.

think we stayed there a couple of years back, as you say, nice and secluded if it's the one with the little campsite next door...

There are less expensive places but like everything else, there is a compromise. I can direct you to places that are much cheaper, but the facilities are not as good as the main marinas. If you want luxury facilities then you pay - less salubrious places then you takes your chance.

There are several places on the Hamble that are not as expensive as MDL and Premier and I can also point you in the direction of my marina up the Itchen. Other forumites here also know the right places, but if you want posh - pay!

yup. thats the one. we had our sealine there and was really nice. put the rib at Port Hamble because it was less distance up the river when it was raining but the new boat is back at Mercury and very happy there too!

sounds like that's worth a look, thanks:cool:

I don't do posh

LOL - nor do I. Mercury is good, but there are cheaper - but then they do tend to be older bits of wood to tie up to and very often cross tide which in the Hamble is not for the faint hearted!

Or come further up Southampton Water to the Itchen and join Ellessar and I at Ocean Quay. Good deals to be had.

come and join us up the top of the Hamble at Foulkes boat yard, The facilities are basic, the pontoons are all good, mooring is not an issue, everyone is very very friendly and it aint expensive!

that seems more like it.. viewed a Doral in that marina when buying the last boat and it looked secure enough.. £3k pa for the existing boat and £4k for the replacement doesn't seem too bad if the facilities are half decent. thanks:cool:

thanks for that.. must admit I've never heard of them so I'll take a look... iis access constrained by tide height that far up the river? cheers

Sunday dinner at the King & Queen is mega ! I appreciate you went on Saturday - but for next time.
Strangely enough I went past Milton Keynes today.

my mistake Roy, we were there Sunday not Saturday and went for the Sunday roasts.. very yummy:cool: it was a return visit as we were so impressed last time we were there, they had some medieval live band on at the time..

I went past Milton Keynes today.

not a bad decision that ;)

Depens what you call half decent facilities - they don't match MDL or Premier but are better than Foulkes and Cabin Boat Yard which is also up the top end of the Hamble. You also have Hamble River Boat Yard and Eastlands which is above the M27 bridge.

There is no issue with water up that far - it is deep enough for most mobos. I suggest you take a meander up there next time you are in the Hamble
