Hi guys. I've taken the decision to remove the lost yachts thread. I don't want to make a call on the validity of the post, but obviously I'd advise caution anyway. It is a shame if these people have lost their boat but all things considered I don't think the post was appropriate.

This is mainly because it was a first-time post by the user and secondly because there was essentially a strong emphasis on the donation and we're very close to the commercial posting line here. I'm going to contact the user in question, but the post would create a precedent I don't really want to set.

I have to run I'm afraid so apologies if you don't get a response from me until later, I hope this explanation will suffice in the meantime.

Thanks,
Dan

It might have been acceptable through a third party, but there was a fine line between what they were doing and begging - although my personal feelings for them are of support, I didnt think this was appropriate

On the off chance that it was genuine and I could help someone, doing something very close to my heart, with my eyes wide open I sent them a tenner. Before anyone asks it was paypal not entering credit card details.
Who knows when any of us may need rescuing?

I think that's a pity, it seemed to give some point to what this community should be about.
Still, I can always benefit from knowing what sort of knot I should use to tie my fenders on with.

Yes, totally agree, did seem very strange as a first post asking for a donation...... Now if it had been Talbot with 11500 posts well thats different /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Something in that story just didn't add up:
1) they state that the yacht was their home and well maintained.
2) yet, when they show pictures of the boat on the reef, it is weeping with rust. The pictures were claimed to show "the day after". Rust doesnt show up overnight, so either
it was not well maintained;
or the pictures are of a random shipwreck
And even if everything checks out, if you put all your life savings in a boat and then not insure it, then disasters like this are somewhat predictable. Agreed that a ferrocement boat is hard to insure, but then get a steel boat.
Make a story with "ant" and "cricket"?

I understand and support your decision Dan, but would request that, if appropriate, you let us know the outcome of your contact with them?

[/ QUOTE ]Nothing to stop them posting again - they've only had one thread removed, not banned from the forum.

Right decision, I reckon. If the same post had been made by a Nigerian, the collected wisdom of the forum members would have resulted in numerous hysterical posts alleging "scam".
