Ref my earlier post on losing my prop in Port Solent marina, I'm delighted to report it's been found!

Oen recommended RS Divers and they successfully retrieved it this morning, for a very reasonable £125. Not only that, the head man, Ruben, is a nice bloke and very helpful. I can highly recommend them - based at Gosport marina on: code 07939 number 533881.

Thanks to forumites for advice, suggestions and support.

I'll get on with bolting it on and into the water for the next adventure!

Better tighten then nut next time /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif What happened, was a cotter pin not fitted? I am sure we would all like to learn from your experience how NOT to fit a prop /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm pleased for you that you got it back and that it didn't cost too much.

Good question. I spoke with Bruntons and they tell me that the prop falling off is very rare, but almost invariably caused by the keyway shearing. The prop is then free to turn on the shaft. Because the hub is locked to the nut, as soon as the engine goes astern, the prop winds itself off the shaft. Of course on a fixed prop the nut is locked to the shaft, not the prop. If the keyway shears, the shaft just turns inside the prop. Why does the keyway shear? Weakened by electrolysis or impact damage (or both).

So, to answer your question - how not to fit a prop - make sure the keyway is a good fit and in good condition. If in doubt, replace. (Oh, and tighten the nut up!)

Glad you got it back. Well done, perseverance paid off.

Don't suppose anyone has the prop I lost/left at Largs Yacht Haven last year do they ? (around the end of July) details here ? Either on the car park or slipway, off a Mercury 8HP outboard, different pitch to standard. If anyone did find one and wants to send it back PM and I will sort it out .
