Lost my forestay up my Nemo furler. Is there a handy way to get it back this afternoon without getting the mast down and probably singlehanded please?

I've tried searching but from the results I've found this may have never happened before - or maybe the answer was so obvious to others they didn't feel the need to ask!

And how to avoid losing it again? Does it really hang on the same pin as the roller gear itself? I may post photos later if the forum allows (I've never tried).

Thanks!

Hi, Gavin.

I'd hope that the forestay wouldn't be too far up the furler - I can't think of any reason it should be. It might be possible to fasten a couple of halyards to take the strain (better than the furler, anyway), free the foot of the furler and fish for the forestay with a bent coathanger, or similar. Don't forget to take the box to play on the foredeck when you need a break to calm down!

Good luck, I've a feeling you may need it...

Rob.

Not familiar with a Nemo but if the forestay has become detached inside the foil the mast will fall down unless you have rigged some alternative support with a halyard.

Manual on line at http://www.nemoindustrie.com/imgdb/prodotti/Manuale avvolgifiocco.pdf if you have not already found it.

Reckon you will have to remove ths bottom section, reconnect what ever has come adrift ( bottle screw ??) and refit Be sure the lock nuts on the bottle screw are done up tight. Locktite them maybe.

Looks feasible without lowering the mast. It is in fact fitted with the mast up.

I wonder if you meant to refer to the forestay or the foil. Did you actually mean to say that the swivel had been pulled up out of reach?

If that's the case then look at posts in this thread:
http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?392775-Headsail-top-swivel

I suggested making up a loop around the foil from wire or similar and using that to catch the swivel. Most subsequent suggestions were based on this idea so it would seem to have a good chance of working.

Apologies if you really did mean the foil had moved up (but I couldn't imagine how it could move more than a foot).

I dont think he meant the foil had moved up... it cannot go far if it does!

At first I thought he meant he had lost the halyard ( and swivel up the furler ) but his last question, " Does it really hang on the same pin as the roller gear itself?" made me think he really did mean he had lost the the forestay up inside the foil.
FWIW the installation instructions in my earlier link show that the forestay and furler should be fitted on separate pins , but who knows what shortcuts have ben made.

The photos will clarify if/when they arrive.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

The good news is that the yard had done the job when I got there yesterday - which was unexpected (they hadn't said so) but I was very pleased.

Looking at the Wonderfurl (amazing name) pdf, it's clear that the short tube it shows is impractical on our Delta 25 - it would place the drum somewhere in the anchor locker. So the tube is a lot longer, and, yes, I think the furler hangs on the same pin in the stem fitting as the forestay.

I'm not inclined to think that this represents a serious engineering deficiency, as it all looks pretty robust and undamaged. However, I continue to be baffled by the whole thing. I can't now even see where the forestay terminates, but I think it's somewhere in that longer tube. I won't hurry to take the mast down myself in future though - even using legs, it's sufficiently tall that it requires several handy blokes on the spot at the right moment to do it.

Onwards...
