Lorry 'hanging out back of ferry'

_45423398_stenaferry.jpg

A ferry bound for Northern Ireland has had to return to Stranraer in Scotland.

Clyde Coastguard said they understood that part of a lorry was hanging out the back of the Stena Voyager vessel.

"There was a loud bang and the ship almost came to a standstill," passenger Peter McCrory, from Dungannon, told BBC News.

"However, we discovered on looking out the rear doors there was a lorry hanging out through the back, it had burst the rear doors."

Anyone know the true story behind this?

Re: Lorry \'hanging out back of ferry\'

So there is no 'doors not secure' warning circuit to the bridge. Nice.

Wasn't that the problem with the Zeebrugge ferry disaster? Doors not secured and bridge unaware of the fact (albeit a monohull). Supposing there had been no loud bang and passenger alert?

Re: Lorry \'hanging out back of ferry\'

I think it was the truck going through the stern door that caused it to come off...

Re: Lorry \'hanging out back of ferry\'

Sure, but if it had done so quietly, when would the bridge have located the exact problem?
At least it has plenty of freeboard with the door hanging open (for now)

Re: Lorry \'hanging out back of ferry\'

Don't worry, the alarms would have started wailing as soon as the clamps were forced. Even old ships were retrofitted after Zeebrugge. Modern ferries can't even start up their engines with the doors open.

Ouch, don't think I would like to be the person tasked with rigging the lifting strop around that precarious item of cargo. Will the upper derricks obstruct the lift?

Looks alright.

I should have said the upper "gantry" type extension thing hanging over the stern.

Re: Lorry \'hanging out back of ferry\'

Ah, thank you !

By the way, the name 'Turners' on the lorry is almost funny, no ?
' Hangers' would be better

Re: Lorry \'hanging out back of ferry\'

It's the port outer door that is gone, so it's clear to lift above that.
