I see the new test transmissions of Loran-C will be starting from Rugby around the beginning of June.

Anyone think this system has any chance against GPS?

Would you buy a second piece of kit for your boat that basically gives the same info as GPS? I suppose the advantage of a second, land based, system comes into its own if all the GPS satellites get nobbled.

Just wondering what people think about it and whether it has any chance?

All sounds a bit too much like DECCA for my liking. That was suspect when in the uk and totally useless in north france and the CI.

Land based system will always be limited and, by definitiion, can never replace GPS. We dont boat on the land.....

Very much like Decca in principle, may be some use as a back-up if GPS fails (unlikely)

Don't see land base relevant - we don't boat 11000 miles up in sky either.

Wouldn't bother with it myself.

We have used Loran-C in Canada and the U.S.A. for many years now. I believe Decca was just a Brit/Europe thing. I understand that Loran is not as absolutely accurate as GPS, probably only to about 100 metres. However, the repeatable accuracy is said to be more accurate than GPS, i.e. leading you back to a man overboard. That information is about ten years old, so whether it still applies to the latest models of GPS I don't know.
