Hi,

You can apparently do the coastal skipper practical course split over three weekends (four if you include the exam) rather than in a contiguous week. This would suit me because I've run out of holidays for this year - but I can't find any sailing school within weekend driving range of Wimbledon that actually offers this format. Does anyone know of one?

Ta,

Hi Southpark,
I have just completed my competent crew with www.secondwindsailing.co.uk
They are based in scotland but you can get flights with Ryanair for £5.99 !!!

Steve the owner/instructor was very helpfull, even picks you up & drops you off at airport. I found it more economical to fly up there & do it this way, rather than doing it down south!

well worth giving them a call to see what they can do for you.

Good luck
Simon

Assuming you do want to get the best out of a course & also really test yourself, rather than simply pick up a paper certificate, you may want to consider the following:
(1) Don't forget the RYA suggested minimum pre-course experience/assumed knowledge "15 days (2 days as skipper) 300 miles 8 night hours. Navigation to Coastal Skipper standard. Sailing to Day Skipper practical standard".
If you do not satisfy these requirements, you will not get what you want out of any course, let alone the 3 x 2 day weekends.
(2) Ask the school exactly who you will be with & what you will be doing.
The RYA logbook suggests a minimum requirement of 5 days. 3 weekends, unless you join early Friday evening & actually sail somewhere, will not fulfill these requirements. You may be put onto a boat with a mixed bag of experiences, some will not turn up until 2100 hrs + so boat stays in sailing Saturday am & boat also needs to be back in by 1600 hrs latest on Sundays. Saturday being spent in a pub, instead of passage making/night approaches etc. This is very sociable, but not good value learning, which your post suggests you want.
3 x weekends are great for schools, but should be carefully checked out with anyone offering them.
