Anyone know a source for a small (around 2 or 3 litre) polyethylene tank which would do as a gravity day tank for my diesel heater? I would prefer something ready made rather than having to get a SS tank made up.

Wallas do a 5 litre fuel tank for their heaters. Polythene, not allowed on inland waterways though.
My boat has the 10 litre version.
Look at the agent's, Kuranda, website, ~£11.
PS. It's a top-feed, so needs a pump that sucks, so might not suit your gravity requirement.

Yes saw those, but they are not gravity feed. I am intending to do without a pump to transfer fuel to heater (just using one to fill up the day tank).

May be a bit cruder than you're thinking - but how about an Oil bottle ...
I used a small bottle for the last boat rather than try and put another feed into the main tank ...

Fireball - could you give us some more detail please, that sounds just what I'm looking for. Googling didn't get me anything useful.

I would have thought that even a top-feeding tank would siphon. Perhaps fit an outboard-style bulb in series to make it easier to re-prime if you ever run out.

The best I have seen so far has been aluminium tanks built for specialist car builders and intended for an expansion tank for the water.

I need something similar, but about 2 litres, bottom pipe of 19mm, and a top filler, and have been looking at truck expansion tanks - nothing yet, but scrappy visit may be successful.

I have seen a 4 litre poly bottle in a stainless cage intended for an expansion tank for a V8 marinised engine.....but it was 135GBP!

Er when I said crude I meant crude. Just your normal oil can from when you change the oil in the engine. !! Cheap as chips because you normally throw them away. ;)

This is a possibility:

RAL055xLarge.jpg

2 Litre alloy catch tank - 2 x 1/2" fittings, sight gauge, drain plug & breather cap. Length =17cm, width=10cm, height=25cm Measurements include all fittings.

£62.45 at http://www.ralloy.com but not sure about non-mainland postage cost.

go kart tank

Mine is only a litre but it doesn't matter if you have top up from your main tank

Bought off ebay for £15

its a tank for a go kart - has the breathing cap and outlet ideal for hose connection

Located high up in the heads on the bulkhead behind the heater

Search on fuel tank on ebay

I can't see any with bottom outlet. Is your setup gravity feed?

i use a black plastic diesel carrying tank purchased at the chandlers, dip the fuel line in the top, manual black hand pump in line.
eber fuel pump lifts it about 50cm no prob.
later i drilled a hole in the top and araldited the line through, tie the fuel line to the handle on the way out for stability, now it's easy to fill too, that was 3 years ago.
it's diesel, i know it can burn, but this stuff is hard to set alight . . .

Is this gravity feed? Or does the fuel pump supply the heater? I'm looking for a gravity feed tank to help keep the electrons in my batteries.

Not wishing to rain on anyone's parade, but diesel is such messy stuff, tanks need vent holes=smell, and if you have to take off and lift from the main tank in order to top up, daily, well.. I have small electric pulsing pump direct to a Taylors dripfeed diesel, which has been known to run for weeks on end without faffing about. IMO. Pump costs same as daytank, all copper pipe installation, nomplastics or extra breathers.

yes it is

the one i found had a spigot on the bottom for a hose connection and two lugs on the side for screwing it to something.

I have fuel hose for the first 2 foot on the heads side of the bulkhead and copper pipe thereafter passing through to the heater on the saloon side of the bulkhead.

The tank is at roof level to give me sufficient head but you can lift it down to fill it because of the flexible hose. also i have a small in line filter to stop grit of dirt getting through to the needle valve on the heater.
