I am looking at making an offer for a 27 foot yacht (long keel ish) in Holland (there are none in the UK and price is very good) but I need to get a reality check as to what the shipping costs would be to get it from Holland (near Rotterdam) back to the UK.

Seems to be some options

A:- Delivery skipper to bring it to Hull and then use road transport up to the Clyde.

B:- Delivery skipper to the River Forth and then for me to take it through the Forth and Clyde canal.

C:- Road transport all the way. I know of several Scottish based companies but wondered if there are any companies based in Hull who undertake yacht transport as they would be close to the Ferry.

I have sent out some requests for quotes but wondered if anyone can anyone give me an opinion of costs / experiences etc or recommend any companies or delivery skippers. (I am too old for North Sea adventures)

Thanks

If you are under no time pressure then I'd wait on a decent forecast and nip across the short hop of the North Sea to the East coast of the UK t he n explore some of the east coast waterways- something I'd have avoided if it wasn't for Dylan...
Then I'd probably opt for either the north coast of France, ( as far as possible from the Solent, sorry...) Cornwall, Ireland and Clyde or the quicker route north up the east coast and through the Cally canal ( cos the scenery is better IMHO)

Why quicker? Well, I'd dawdle up the Irish coast....probably the west coast as it's superb.

If you are going to use road transport then get it all the way to where you want the boat. The biggest component of cost will be the ferry crossings, so the extra from Hull to Clyde will not be great.

That size of boat is awkward as it is probably too big for a trailer but too small to justify one of the dedicated boat transporters. You also have the lifts at each end to think about and it might be worth looking at a flat bed with a Hiab and have a cradle made for the boat.

At a guess (based on what I paid for transport from Spain to Poole) you are probably looking at £3 to 3.5k

I think the mixed-mode option (A) would be expensive and hardest to arrange. Probably best for her either to float all the way or roll all the way. If I were you I'd go for B. The Forth and Clyde costs peanuts, so you would just have the delivery costs. They'll depend on whether you go for a one-man band or a professional outfit, but in the former case I'll hazard a guess at a thousand quid, all in. Not much less to Hull and then another thousand by road, plus lifting on and off.

When I needed to get my boat from Milford Haven, where I bought her, to the Clyde the road transport quotes were all about a thousand, and I ended paying a very nice and competent chap (with certificates and everything) to bring her up, as I just didn't have time. Including all expenses and one way car hire back it came in at about nice hundred.

The Forth Clyde Canal is closed for most of the winter.

I recently received this notice,

"Scottish Canals would like to remind you that Network Rail will be carrying out upgrading works to Carmuirs Tunnel beside The Falkirk Wheel. Therefore the canal will be closed at that point from Monday 20thOctober 2014through to and including Friday 27th March 2015. A towpath diversion will be in place."

Thank you all for your replies. With the closure of the F & C canal I think it is unlikely I can get the boat there in time as deal has not been finalised yet

I have however got some prices for sea delivery to Harwich, then lift out, mast off and store up to a month at Shotley Marina, then road transport to the Clyde ~ £3225 total.

Sea delivery inc fuel to Harwich ............................£650
One month Marina costs, lift out and mast removal.. £775
Road transport from Harwich to Clyde ..................£1800

Thinking about either getting a price for road all the way as the sea trip and Marina charges amount to almost £1500 or get sea delivery all the way to the Forth and haul out at Port Edgar and wait for the F & C canal to open in the spring.

Phone Paul Clark - 07855 353916.
Regularly transports yachts, big and small all over the UK and between UK and Europe.

I used him recently and was very pleased with the service, his knowledge, and the price!
