Thanks to all who responded to my first post on this subject a couple of weeks ago. I have just seen a Gibsea 37. Two cabin version which is what we are looking for. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience of this make and it's suitability for the task? We like the Legend 36 but can't find many on the used market. All information (and opinion) welcomed.

This moody for instance Moody

[/ QUOTE ]I wouldn't waste 2 secs on any yacht that puts pics of the vanity unit ahead of full details of construction, AVS, rigging, sails, keel and rudder config etc.

But if by blue-water cruising you mean parked up in a permanent berth in Sete, you have a point.

An unexpected new baby (a boy who arrived last week /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) means we might be going larger so our Moody might be available if we can find a suitable replacment. Not an easy task as we are very happy with her.

Re: Interesting about the advert

No I haven't told them yet, but having spent some time there you may be forgiven for thinking it is owned by Germans or Brits. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Seriously it helps the search engine, and helps those who are nervous of buying abroad if they can see the owner is from UK.

Don't tell the Spanish as I have a place in Gibraltar so I'll be in even more trouble /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Interesting about the advert

I can't really afford the Moody! My budget is £55-70K. Am I right that there's not much to choose between Jeanneau, benetteau,Dufour, gibsea, Bavaria... or am I missing something?

Re: Interesting about the advert

At the risk of getting slaughted on here , here goes. Production boats are built to a price. What is right for one will not be right for another, depending on proposed use and personal taste. ( I have known people choose based on curtains!). My order of quality- and by quality I mean build, design/performance and asthetics would be:

1. Dufour

2. Jeanneau

3. Beneteau (performance range is good though)

4. Gibsea

5. Bavaria

Now that is just my opinion and some models within the ranges I would move up or down the scale.

I suspect the prices of each boat probably fall in line with the above too. I sell new Dufours and used Jen/Bavs etc. Have owned a legend and a Benny and a Westerly so it's an opinion based on experience. I chose to sell new Dufours because of my opinion so my bias is not because I sell new ones. None of the boats are "bad" they just aim at different segments of the market. But they are not the same.

Re: Interesting about the advert

Jonic makes a good point.
All production boats are built to a price & their target market. That price is mostly set by production costs . It stands to reason that you get what you pay for & all the 'usual' french & german boats all target the same market, all have similar production costs & are all much of a muchness.
Instead of comparing boats from similar economic ares try comparing these makes with boats from other areas where the economy is not so strong & the cost of living is substantially lower & you will find you get a much better product at a lower comparative price. In short, Boats built in Poland cost less to build than boats built in France or Germany so you actually get more for your money.
Take a close look at Delphia. Good quality build with good quality kit as standard. For the money which is very close to your budget you wont do better.

"Have owned a legend and a Benny and..."

I am slightly surprised that you rate bavarias above legends having been an owner. I have a good sailing mate who has a bav, we sailed in company for many hours over the last 2 years, and we were always able to outsail them and they always came to our boat for dinner and wine.

FWIW

Re: Interesting about the advert

Hi pops

Thats a close run thing but I was on the same Atlantic crossing as the 42 that had the rudder stock problem and have had one on brokerage that had some build issues with the hull, but then again have had other makes with build problems. In fact one thing I learnt when going off long term cruising is that NO boat- even bespoke super yachts are immune to problems. I had no issues with the legend 26 I owned nor a 36 that I chartered out of Gibraltar. As I said I don't think any are "bad" boats and my list will differ from others.

My list is also biased towards ocean cruising.

Re: Interesting about the advert

I see from your profile your hobbies are exactly the same as mine /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Interesting about the advert

I agree - our budget was £60k, and found plenty of the following Moody's within budget:

34 / 346
35
37 / 376
older 36's

Search for Moody under £70k on yachtworld and see what comes up! Also - remember to search above your budget. For example if your limit is £70k, search for under £75k - as there is always room for negotiation on price (plus if you really want it you can always find a couple of tho' extra somewhere!)

Good luck with the search

Hey Jonny

Can you give me ring about your hydrovane. (Don't forget to tell them about the nice broker who helped find your boat /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
