Hi,

We have just purchased a Westerly Falcon 34 and looking to get the awful looking seat covers re-upholstered. Does anyone know of anyone reasonable to do it around the Solent, or Sussex or Surrey?

Thanks

Sam

Thanks, and that was another question i forgot to ask, as its our 1st boat any recommendations on what sort of fabric we need to use? Do we need special fabric or if i find someone local to do it and the right fabric will that work? Thanks

You just need a good quality fabric. You can get water resistant fabric, but it's not necessary on most boats. Nicky will talk you through the options.

Nothing particularly special needed for fabric - the days of nasty wipe-clean vinyl are long gone. Obviously something that’s unusually sensitive to water may not be the best choice, and hardwearing and stain-resistant are good qualities, but they’re not special marine features.

We actually had ours done by a small firm that normally re-covers bus seats, using a fabric from their normal bus catalogue - no signs of wear yet ?

Quay canvas at Deacons did a very good new mattress for me at good (well, fair anyway) price. Ask for rene

No connections etc.

Most of the "marine" fabrics are fabrics used for chairs in old peoples homes, hence the rubberised backing. I used some chenille upholstry fabric from eBay (chenille upholstery fabric | eBay) and got someone to supply new foam. & years ago I was quoted from £2,500 but I managed to get it done for £800 including curtains. Sam, I would fit new foam as well as you do not know what has been spilled on the existing foam and if any salt water has reached the foam, it just attracts moisture and that can cause mould.

sewtrim.co.uk located in Botley (think it is the company prv refers to). Doing the seats of my Morgan next month. Very competitive quote and have seen their work on both car seats and boats. Will be going there as first choice if I do re-upholster my new boat. Make sure the fabric is fire resistant, which I think is almost universal now.

If you get other quotes perhaps you could share your experiences.

Yes - I couldn't remember the name but I'm pretty sure that's them. They did an excellent job on Ariam (standard foam seat bases / mattresses, fixed backrest pieces, loose cushions, and a stool top) at a decent price. Eight years on it still looks as-new. Would happily recommend.

I don't have any fabrics with rubberised backing, nor would I want them. Maybe the OP doesn't have anyone sleeping on his saloon seats, but it still sounds clammy and unpleasant, and shouldn't be necessary on a typical cruising yacht.

Perhaps a PVC cover for the nav-table seat, at most, for sitting down in wet oilies to plot a fix. But I've never found that necessary myself.

I used them based on your recommendation (and the fact I'm based in Botley) :)
Steve is a top chap and they recovered all of the upholstery (and replaced the foam as needed) on my Moody 36. Very pleased

Yes, I followed your recommendation. They are next door to the bus refurbisher. Quote for refacing my Morgan seats in leather and replacing the foam in one was almost half the price quoted by the Morgan dealer I normally use. Being next to the station is handy as I can drop the car off and get a train back to Poole.

For many years I've used Hawke House at Havant, and have been pleased with the work they have done for me. They have a very wide range of quality materials and fabrics, and will visit your boat in the Solent area to fit if necessary. But perhaps not the cheapest. It's worth checking their website: hawkehouse.co.uk
