hello,

another odd query from me...

Still waiting for the sale completion (delayed yet again to early next week...) so home alone (well not quite) and redesigning the cabins/heads/etc.
Thing is that although I'm used to designing habitable spaces (wife doesn't always agree on that mind you) I have a problem visualising a space that has no secure and constant boundaries - I'm talking about the recessing hull lines and the differences in plan you have at varying heights of the hull.

My CAAD/BIM program can cope with sloping walls et al as long as I define them properly. There I have a problem, I'm 300km away from the boat, I cannot measure anything and hence I'm looking for a set of drawings, sections of deep-v hull designs (that's what I think I have...) that I can use to setup a rough guide of where I'm inside and where I'm outside the hull whilst designing. I know it's going to be a rough guide and once I do a careful measurement I'll have to edit the hull design and extend/trim the relevant walls/cabinets/etc, but still better than nothing.

Any 3D model of such a hull would be even more interesting.
Size of the craft is 43ft so anything around that size give take 5-6ft should provide a good starting point. Only interested in the bow/centre not bothered with engines and stern.

Tried to get two photos side elevation and front view to perspective correct and use them as a backdrop for this job but its not easy. Worse comes, I'll wait and take a series of photos all around and stitch them together in a 3D model using photogrametric techniques and ready available s/w.

cheers

Vassilis

have you tried to use Google Sketchup ?
we 've got the pro version here in the company,
it seams very easy to use,
on line tutorials and examples, etc,...
on line (googable) library is a very powerfull feature

you could gradually draw your complete boat in there...

no experience myself

There is a 3 - D sketch of a Mystere on Andy Hayward's website here - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andy.hayward/Pages/Mystere.html
But I doubt that this will help you very much.

I have a copy of a boat report on the Mystere from Motor Boat and Yachting from the mid 70's; this report has a VERY basic lines plan and body plan drawing in it, which you might be able to use as a basis if you scale it up and then roughly fair it?

If you send me your email address by PM, I will email you (or anybody else who is interested) the copy of the report if you would like it.

Bart, I've being using professionaly AutoCAD for the last 20yrs, so the software is not the problem (mind you SketchUp is v.good for a non designer to model in 3D simply quickly and with minimal accuracy...)

Anyhow I've drawn in 2D what I'm planning to do already, it's a matter of making sure everything fits within the hull lines, hence the need for 3D.

cheers

thanks for the info,

i've already built my layout based on the simple white on black line drawing plan from the website you mention. Mind you I'd forgoten the x-rayish 3D sketch, but it wont really help.

My hull is the original wooden one out of which the GRP version of Mystere came from, so would be very helpful. PM sent and looking forward to the report and body plan drawing. I guess MystereMarcus would be also interested (having a Mystere).

Any other 3D models will be gladly accepted (easier to modify a 3D model than build it afresh if you dont have enough info!)

cheers

Hi Vassilis,
Sorry I'm coming in late to this thread. I actually have a copy of the MBY Mystere report that Bajansailor has kindly offered (but not with me, but can easily scan it if Bajansailor has any problems). I also have a report from a German magazine that was given to me when I bought the boat. This has a standard layout view of the craft which is probably no help to you at all but if you PM me you Email I'll send it across to you.

Revealing some of my normal useless knowledge....

As 3D modelling (spin-off from Cambridge Uni) with object-centred technology for the design of plant in 3D was only introduced in 1967, I doubt that this found it's way into Versilcraft in the early 70's.... My guess is that at that time they relied upon hand drawn items and designed their vessels based upon a time hounoured tradition of experience and knowledge passed on through generations of hull and interior design in the marine world.
Finding CAD drawings may therefore be quite challenging, but a pointer may be towards Enterprise Marine in Italy. The founder or Enterprise Marine, builtour boat ( CentroMarine Astrale 45) back in the early 80's, and they may have drawings available for you to scan and import into tools as GTX RasteCAD (Plugin to AutoCAD) for your purposes...
