My first real job was in a boatyard,David Hillyards at Littlehampton. The first assignment was wheel barrowing down to the dock the new black varnished pig iron to load aboard a brand new 9 tonner. After serveral trips the yard foreman remarked that he reckoned it was way too much internal ballast,so work stopped whilst calculations where made.I just remember the look of the boat.gleaming varnish work robust not fancy woodwork and the smell of stockholm tar and fresh paint.Years later I spent several days sorting thru the scrap to find pig irn ballast for my own boat-......and wheelbarrowing it to put aboard.
