Hello, finally getting ready to splash the Westerly Longbow31 with just a few final jobs to complete. Looking at keeping her in the Chichester area and have been in touch with the harbour conservancy and was told she was category A2 and about £1600p/a for a non drying mooring.

Does anyone know of any other mooring options in the area that work out cheaper than the £1600

What Marinas Harbours Destinations are there within a shortish day sail that have reasonable places to overnight grab a bite to eat etc and if needed pop in a local pub etc.

Regards

Well. That area does dry a "bit". Thornam Marina is about that price range but drying. All the others about the same with sluice gates and 15 boats on a waiting list. Chichester marinas mean high tide sailing and sluice gates all around. Day sailing will need to be done under those conditions. You can off course go out and overnight on a weekend on a huge number of amazing places all within reach of a day sail and come back the next day on the tide. A day sail in there is a relatively short affair 1.5 hour either side of the tide at best.

It depends what you mean by 'in the area'. You could certainly get a mooring (and club membership) for less than that in Portsmouth harbour. Try Portchester SC... http://portchestersc.org/
Of course, you wouldn't be joining the club JUST to get a cheap mooring. Drop in or email for information.

More than happy to be involved with a sailing club, did have a look a Porchester sailing clubs site but it seems to mention waiting lists. Any other clubs worth getting in touch withlooking at.

TBH very much interested in overnight weekend trips rather than short day sails mooring up with access to good food and beer near by mak

To clarify my position the boat is currently ashore at a yard in Chatham whilst I finish the final few jobs. I was going to keep her in chatham at a sailing club for around £600p/a but the options of where to go for short passages for a meal pub kip on the boat scenario does seem limited. Stangate creek Ramsgate Sheppey etc
So my thought is to keep her somewhere else where there are a number of short day/half day sails where I can reach a nice harbour marina with nice pubs with food etc overnight and then return the following day or so making a nice weekend of it. I dont mind travelling by car (I live in Tonbridge) so portsmouth chichester etc are ideal. The main consideration is cost of mooring but I am happy to get involved in club activities after all its all part of the experience. I dont mind swing moorings she is a fin keel so drying maybe limited

Hope that makes things clearer

Regards

Fairly certain the only waiting lists are for deep water mooring close to the slipway (moorings a bit further away are usually available) and for winter storage ashore.
For the type of sailing you are looking for you are better off being 'inside' the Solent ie so that you can come out of harbour and turn left or right. From Chi you can only really turn right. From Portsmouth you have the whole length of the Solent and Southampton water within a day sail in one direction, plus Langstone and Chi in the other.

Had a drive down the solent yesterday to have a look around and get a feel for the place. Thanks for recommending Porchester looks superb and just the kind of place I would like to be with a number of short Sails what is the procedure for becoming a member. Was quite late so didn't get much chance to pop in. Any further information about the club and being a member would be much appreciated

Chichester harbour is nice for ditch crawling but there's a large area that dries at LW. Getting in and out over the bar can be hazardous and is often exciting. Chimet shows conditions over the bar, watch and compare with Bramblemet (when it's actually working). I sail out of Portsmouth Harbour (Haslar Creek) and if the weather's any good at all, I can come and go at all states of the tide. A big + for me. The -ve is the A32 from Fareham to Gosport. The Hamble is mobbed and if you berth in the upper reaches it's a bit like the M25 at weekends. Southampton and Hythe are a bit far from the Solent proper so it's an extra hour, maybe, both ways if you actually want to go somewhere (tides permitting). The Royal Southampton has berths in the Rive Beaulieu but access is NOT all tides there either. that only leaves Lymington on the Mainland. +1 for the Portchester and Gosport Hardway clubs; very friendly. There's also a club at the mouth of the Meon, if you have a bilge keeler. I don't think they'll have anything for a fin, but it doesn't hurt to ask...
