Hello Watermint.

I don't think it's a new marina, as such, although it might be a small basin to keep a few boats in. Are you on the Port Authority emailing list for 'Notices to Mariners'? There was a notice about works to the NATO jetty, issued on 17 February. It said:

NOTICE TO MARINERS NO. 32 OF 2012 - WORKS TO NATO JETTY AT BURTON

1. MARINERS ARE HEREBY ADVISED of works to remove a section of the eastern boundary wall at the NATO Jetty site at Burton, approximate position 51o 42'.31N 004o 55'.24W.

2. Works will commence on 28th February 2012 for the period of one week.

3. All works will be carried out by excavators operating from the Jetty structure with all spoil deposited inside the boundary of the Jetty structure. No impediment to the safety and ease of navigation is expected.

4. Mariners are advised to navigate with caution and remain clear of these works.

5. Admiralty chart 3275 and Imray 2600.11 refer.

6. A further Notice will be promulgated once these works are complete.

It will be interesting to see what results from these works.

The large structure on the river in Burton called the NATO jetty was built during the Cold War.

just haft to see in the long run ?

As you suggest, who knows what's going to happen.

This 'Pembrokeshire Marine Group' came to Milford Marina with lots of big plans, including a major alteration of the lock. Despite PMG becoming responsible for the running of Milford Marine more than a year ago nothing significant has happened.

I can't see there being enough money in the area to pay for big changes. And for a marina to be created inside the old NATO jetty walls, with boats remaining afloat, there would need to be a huge amount of excavation or a lock gate would be required, judging by the levels I see each time we go past.

I'm not likely to be up there until April at the earliest so keep us posted!

Last time I went to Milford marina there were more empty shops than full ones. It seems to me that there may be even less call for the retail units mentioned in the links above.

Yeah right!
Spoke with Natham before the big 'do' at Milford last year.... full of his funding for the new lock.... nothing heard of it since.

There is already outline planning for the marina at Front Street Pembroke and nothing has happened there yet.

Most of the retail units in Milford marina are empty.

So all in all.... no chance!

I wonder if there is even any demand for another marina in the haven? From what I can make out it doesn't seem that either marina's are as full as they used to be. When we first moved the boat to the area many years ago there were waiting lists for both, I don't think this is the case anymore. I know someone who has recently bought a 9 meter yacht and had a marina berth for it straight away.

I can't get over the amount of shops that have closed around Milford Marina. It was deserted when were there last in December.

I remember seeing adverts for the dry stack system coming to Milford but again, when we were last there it didn't look like this was happening, has work started on this now?

i no the have not don the dry stack system yet , but as Milford marina had the plans to do the dry stack system , i no ( dail sailing ) put dry stack system up in neyland and thay wher a lot faster than Milford marina , thers lods of dry stack system at ( dail sailing ) , neyland was a lot faster then Milford marina, Milford marina is slow of dowing stuff ,

The caisson gate, that's the inner gate, was out of use for about a month (I think) whilst repairs were being carried out. This gate has been troublesome for quite a while. When the work was being done access was restricted to freeflow only, i.e. 2 hours of every 12 or so. The caisson gate appears to be OK at present.

All lock gates seem to leak a bit. The water level in the dock basin goes up and down but I've never seen less than 7m where our berth is on C pontoon. As the dock is used commercially, as well as by leisure boats, the Port Authority has a strong interest in keeping the lock working properly.

This is our first season in Milford Haven Marina....well winter season I should say. We were looking for somewhere to keep Grumpy through the winter months, but use her for winter fishing in the Haven so it seemed the ideal place.
At first they had a full locking service,i.e,as they do in the summer months.
Then this was reduced to a "winter timetable" with just an hour or so either side of free-flow giving us 4 or 5 hours at best.
Then we were informed there "gate problems and emergency work" which then gave us just free-flow. That is the only down side for us realy as we were hopeing to use the lock more freely. A lot of the regulars are of the opinion the "problems" are self inflicted every winter so as to cut down on operating and staff costs.....
Marina staff are friendly and helpfull though which is nice!
Retail units on the one side are all closed up, and on the other side the cafe's only seem to open when the sun is out on a sunday morning.
For me, it serves a purpose and I would be very surprised to see a new marina being constructed in the Haven with the amount of free berths already available.
